BULLETINS
Fr. Kevin's Cluttered Desk
Sunday, April 27, 2025
There are times when I sit at my desk scratching my head and wondering how things have unfolded in our Liturgy. Today is Mercy Sunday, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday or the 2nd Sunday of Easter, but what is really interesting is that every year on the 2nd Sunday of Easter, the reading from the Gospel is always the same. The 1st and 2nd readings change but not the Gospel. So, what is so special about this Gospel that it has to be read every year for this Sunday? Now the history lesson: In The Genesee Diary, Henri Nouwen recalled that the name Didymus, aka Thomas, means “twin" and that the Fathers of the Church had commented that all of us are “two people: a doubting one and a believing one. We need the support and love of our brothers and sisters to prevent our doubting person from becoming dominant and destroying our capacity for belief.” And so, we might say that the Church is inviting us to reflect not so much on “Doubting Thomas” as on the living and dynamic faith of the community - the Church - of which Thomas was a part. Like Thomas, we also experience the Resurrection within and through the faith of the Church as we meet Christ in Word and Sacrament. This is where we encounter the fullness of the mercy we celebrate on this Sunday of Divine Mercy. Have you ever had one of those moments where you struggle with your faith, but you see the faith of others and that seeing their faith you are lifted up? Have you ever struggled with your faith and realized how your faith has faltered and you seek the “mercy” of God? And as always, the battle between the flesh (that needs answers) and the Spirit (that lives by faith) continues and God pours His love, His grace, His mercy upon us to strengthen our faith, hope and love.
Peace Fr. Kevin
