James and John likely don’t understand Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel. They want the privilege of being at the Lord’s side, but they don’t understand what that will require of them. Jesus’ response is clear: Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant. In our own lives, let us strive to follow Jesus’ example, who came to serve rather than to be served.
